Spathiphyllum is a perfect office and house plant, and there are several reasons for it. First of all, it looks very noble. Secondly, it will thrive with minimal attention and care. And the last, but not the least, studies have shown that this plant cleans air from such environmental contaminants as ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and many more. There is no other known house plant that is as good in air-cleaning as spathiphyllum. Thus, this plant is a «must-have» not only for gardeners and collectors, but for everyone, who takes good care of health.

Spathiphyllum is a good air-cleaning plant.

Spathiphyllum’s name derives from Greek words meaning «leaf» and «spathe», specifying the type of spathe, which is the leaf encircling thick flower cluster. More commonly used name of spathiphyllum is peace lily, hinting at its resemblance with a white flag of surrender.

Spathiphyllum was first brought to Europe in 1824 by Gustav Wallis, whose name is commemorated in the flower’s Latin name of S.Wallis. Since that time spathiphyllum has developed a lot. The appearance of this plant varies from miniature to massive, from deep green leaves with pure white flowers to golden foliage specimens. This flower enjoys warm and humid environment as in the wild it can be found in the dense rainforests of Venezuela and Colombia. Tropical climate zone is the one that they got used to.

Spathiphyllum has very nice glossy leaves and an outstanding ability to bloom receiving moderate amount of light. Its beautiful snow-white flower turns its color to greenish or yellow after a week of blooming and remains like this for approximately one more month. This plant flowers only when it is mature. Professional growers, however, sometimes use a plant hormone to make Spathyphyllum blossom on command, but we won’t comment if it’s good or bad to achieve fantastic results using unnatural components like this.

The best time for repotting spathiphyllum is February and March, and the best pot for it is Asti by Santino.

Asti pot by Santino

is two-in-one pot which contains two parts:

the inner pot with drainage holes for better moisture of the roots and easy oxygen circulation
● external stylish pot with water reservoir and water level clear window.

Made of plastic, Santino pots are strong, durable and reusable, year after year. All self-watering planters include a large built-in reservoir which draws water to the roots for up to 4 weeks and prevents them from rotting by allowing an easy oxygen circulation. Santino pots are great for an outdoor garden, balcony, indoor decoration, greening projects etc.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Self-Watering pot Asti by Santino
  • Spathiphyllum
  • Potting mix
  • Gravel
  • Gloves
  • Trowel

STEP 1/7

Take natural gravel. Pour a layer of gravel into the inner pot for better drainage. Drainage is extremely important to your plant’s health, because it prevents many problems, including root rot, which is very dangerous for flowers, as they do not recover from it as a rule.

STEP 2/7

Pour a small amount of soil on the drainage. It will help to adjust an optimum humidity level in the pot.

STEP 3/7

Place your plant into the flower pot. Try not to disturb the roots.

STEP 4/7

Fill the remaining soil around the plant at the bottom of the plant level. Slightly compress.

STEP 5/7

Add more soil, because it will settle in 2-3 weeks by 5-10%. Make sure that the growing point is not covered with soil.

STEP 6/7

Water your plant well directly into the soil. Spathiphyllum loves high humidity. The soil in its pot should be kept evenly moist. Special drainage holes in the pot Asti by Santino will help to prevent soggy soil, the main cause of root rot.

STEP 7/7

Keep an eye on your plant – the water-level window will help you to understand, when it is time to water your plant.

LIGHT

Spathiphyllum should be placed in bright light, but not direct sun, because it can damage plant’s leaves. If you place your flower in too shadowy place, it will tolerate low light, but don’t expect robust growth and profuse blossoming.

TEMPERATURES

The most suitable temperature for spathiphyllum is within a range of 18-22 °C.

FEEDING

Fertilize your plant on a monthly basis in spring and summer. If your plant grows indoors usually it doesn’t require much fertilizer. Excessive fertilizing may lead to burning of tips or roots. It’s better to dilute one quarter or even a half of the recommended strength of balanced liquid humus.

WATERING

Tap water shouldn’t be given to spathiphyllum as this plant is sensitive to a group of minerals and chemicals that can be found in it. Give your flower lukewarm filtered water two or three times per week. Regular spray with the same water will be also enjoyed by your plant. If the leaves look wilting, most probably the root has dried out. Winter is a rest period for spathiphyllum. Before blossoming time leave your spathiphyllum into a light place with a temperature of about 15 °C. It should remain there for 6-8 weeks. In summer you may move your plant on the patio or in the garden, but avoid places, where direct sun rays may reach it.

Regularly clean the leaves of your spathiphyllum using a damp cloth as it will not only give a fresh look to your plant, but also remove some pests like mealy bugs, which tend to appear under the bottom of such wide foliage. Check on a regular basis if your plant has dead flowers and remove them.

Spathiphyllum is considered to bring woman’s happiness into the house. Some people believe that if you give this plant to a young unmarried woman as a gift, she will marry soon.
